From inside the Machu Picchu site, you can see Wayna Picchu on the left. It's the mountain you've seen in probably every picture ever of Machu Picchu. Now it's hard to make out in this picture but there are actually stairs leading all the way to the top. According to Wikipedia, the temple at the top of Wayna Picchu was the "residence for the high priest and the local virgins." So there's that. Here's our "before" picture. So ambitious, so destined for a world of pain. Only 400 people per day are allowed to climb Wayna Picchu. You can either buy a ticket for 7:00 AM or 10:00 AM. Since t

We're just going to pretend that liking stuff ironically is boring and outdated. 5:00 AM - 7:00 AM : Bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM : Breakfast 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM : Train from Ollantaytambo to KM 104 After our 5:00 AM bus leaves Cusco and drives 2 hours to the small village of Ollantaytambo, we board a train that goes to Aguas Calientes. For people that don't hike the Inca Trail, there are buses that run from Aguas Calientes up to Machu Picchu. If you do hike the trail, you can get off at "KM 10

"enter at your own risk?" kind of deal... We pretty much hit the trifecta going to a place that had a fire that year, days after a massive rainstorm, DURING the government shut down. I would not be in good conscience if I didn't lay out that we knowingly took on the liability of entering this trail. That said, this was an incredibly interesting experience seeing the effects of the Malibu fires. Here is the picnic area at the start of this trail. Just entire tables burned to pieces. There really wasn't a tree that was safe on this hike. It was like walkin

So along the main road there are two parking lots (where we took this first picture), and then there's a driveway that leads down to a lower parking lot by a campground.  Us trying to decide who was going to catch us not paying for parking We couldn't get down to the lower parking lot because the gate was closed (thanks, Obama!) so we got to add a cool half mile at the beginning and end of our hike. Here I am early on in the hike, describing to Ash what a true wedding arch should look like.  When you reach the top (which is only defined as the top by us because we were ready to turn around, you can continue on up to other trails if you wish), you'll be able to see clearly through Santa
